Abstract
The main objective of this doctoral thesis is to analyze the urban development process of destinations created by and for tourism, with special emphasis in the role that the attraction of creative residents plays in their evolution, and taking as a case study the municipalities of the Buenos Aires Province, Argentina. The results have helped to understand the relationship between urban growth, tourism development, and the attraction of creative residents. Firstly, the study verifies the diversity, complexity, and dynamism that the tourist destinations of the littoral of Buenos Aires Province hold in evolutionary terms; and identifies different groups of cities according to the change processes that tourism has caused in them. Secondly, it has been detected that, in the processes of attracting creative residents in the tourist municipalities, human factors, particularly tolerance and talent, are the ones that catalyze the dynamics of attraction. Finally, the role of creatives in the urban development of tourist destinations and, therefore, in their urbanization dynamics, has been modeled from a hypothetical-deductive approach. The results constitute a contribution of interest in a field of research relevant to the Latin American case and to the analysis of the processes of tourist urbanization of the places created by and for tourism from the triple perspective of their evolution as destinations, of the singularity of such urbanization processes and of the role that the attraction of creative residents has for the dynamics of urban transformation.
