Abstract
Contacts between China and Spain have a long tradition dating back to the first missions in the sixteenth century. However, there is a significant vacuum in the historiography on the interrelations between the two countries in the nineteenth century and the first half of the twentieth century. Recent research projects are recovering a wealth of materials that testify an important presence of China in the Spanish culture of the period. In this context, this article analyses the presence of the visual imaginary of China in fin-de-siècle Spain. By looking at images and photographs of China in popular culture and the illustrated press, the article underscores the existence of a strong mediation of foreign sources simultaneous with direct approaches by Spanish diplomats, missionaries, and travellers, the productivity of a lack of direct knowledge and the continuity of an exotic imaginary
