Abstract
The concept of retranslation generally intends to define the limits of a culture’s own tradition. This is probably the reason for the recent flowering of investigations dedicated to this field. Retranslation studies allow the reconstruction of the solidity of the great Western cultures that have been so harshly examined by postcolonial studies and from so many other perspectives that have constantly undermined old certainties. The study of retranslation opens up, however, an enormous contradiction. On the one hand, there is the desire to return to the political maps where countries are represented with different colours, clearly separated from each other, as homogenized and indivisible entities. On the other hand, researchers have built a network of intellectual complicities that have made it possible to examine what cultures rarely dare to observe, that is, the foundations that hold the whole building together. To examine retransla-tions is to examine the inner cohesion of a culture and, at the same time, to understand how it builds its relationship with other traditions
