Joan Miquel Gomis is an associate professor in the Faculty of Economics and Business at the Universitat Oberta de Catalunya (UOC) and a researcher in the university's New Perspectives on Tourism and Leisure (NOUTUR) research group, the objective of which is to analyse the impacts that tourism and leisure activities have on the contexts of destinations (territories), organizations and consumption patterns (tourists and residents). He also has a PhD from the Department of Economics and Business Organization at the Universitat de Barcelona (UB) and a bachelor's degree in Information Sciences from the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (UAB). Currently, he is the director of the PhD program in Tourism at the UOC, which is part of the Interuniversity Program of the Redintur network (12 universities). From 2006 to 2017, he was the academic director of the Tourism diploma and later the Tourism degree. He was also the academic coordinator (2006-2008) and co-academic director (2008-2010) of the Master's in Management, Policy, and Strategy of Tourist Destinations, jointly organized by the UOC and UN Tourism through Tedqual. During the same period (2006-2010), he was also the co-academic director of the postgraduate program in "Management and Marketing of Tourism Organizations," jointly organized by the UOC and the Universitat de les Illes Balears (UIB). From 2021 to 2024, he was the academic director of the continuing education area in the field of Tourism at the UOC. As a researcher, his R&I activity is focused on studying the improvement of managemengt and the sustainability of tourism organizations, mainly through the analysis of innovation and technologies. His main research interests are in the fields of ICT and tourism, responsible tourism, tourism marketing processes (especially intermediary services) and educational innovation in tourism. Topics on which he has focused his scientific publications and teaching. Gomis has been the editor of the economics, business and society journal Oikonomics (https://oikonomics.uoc.edu/) since it was founded in 2014. In the period from 2000 to 2003, he was deputy editor of the weekly tourism trade journal Editur. In the period from 2005 to 2010, he was vice president of the association Turisme Just, which he co-founded with Carlos Tudurí to promote more responsible and sustainable tourism through publications, awareness-raising campaigns and training.
