Lluís Garay’s research activity focuses on the analysis of structural transformations within the tourism sector, with particular attention to the impacts of digitalisation, platform economies, and shifts in tourism production, consumption, and governance models. This trajectory began with his doctoral dissertation, which examined the historical-economic development of tourism in Catalonia and laid the foundations for a broader research agenda aimed at understanding tourism dynamics from an economic and territorial perspective. His subsequent work expanded to the study of transformations across different tourism products and segments, including rural tourism and cruise tourism. This research addressed issues related to the reconfiguration of value chains, emerging forms of intermediation, and the socio-economic effects on destinations and local communities. Currently, his scientific activity is structured around three main research areas: * Platform economy and tourism: analysis of how digital platforms reshape tourism markets, labour relations, regulatory processes, and governance frameworks, as well as their territorial and social implications. * Destination image, representation, and tourist behaviour: examination of the processes through which destination images are constructed and projected, including the role of digital environments, social media, and user-generated content. * Social responsibility, sustainability, and justice: investigation of the social, environmental, and economic dimensions of tourism, with particular emphasis on social and environmental justice, inclusion, and accessibility. His research integrates both quantitative and qualitative approaches and engages with contemporary debates on sustainability, digitalisation, and transformations of work in tourism. This activity is carried out through competitive research projects, peer-reviewed publications, and international collaborations, contributing to the advancement of knowledge at the intersection of tourism, digitalisation, and territorial development.
