Maria Julià Barceló's R&I work focuses on the European Union's peacekeeping missions in the framework of its Common Security and Defence Policy (CSDP) outside the current borders of the EU. She analyses these European missions, examining their legal bases, origins and development through successive reforms of EU treaties, their organizational structure and the procedure for their creation and on-the-ground implementation. She also studies the international implementation agreements governing the status of the states where these missions take place, and that of non-EU member states participating in them. Her main research interests regarding the European Union are peacekeeping missions, foreign relations, trading policy, human rights and cultural heritage. She also specializes in World Trade Organization (WTO) agreements and their direct applicability.
