Athina Sismanidou holds a bachelor's degree in Law from the University of Athens, an MBA from the University of Manchester – Alliance Manchester Business School and a PhD in Business Administration from the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya (UPC). She joined the UOC in 2019 as a member of faculty to teach finance. She has previously taught as an adjunct professor on official master's degree programmes at EADA Business School, the Universitat Politécnica de Catalunya and the IQS School of Management. Her research examines different topics associated with the aviation industry. More specifically, in the area of finance, her work focuses on the real options assessment of companies and of risk and the impact of social and environmental sustainability on financial performance. In the field of aviation management, her research seeks to quantify and forecast air traffic demand, airport capacity policies and the impact of technology on airline distribution. In addition to her academic background, Athina Sismanidou has extensive professional experience in the private sector. She has worked at Amadeus (IBEX 35: AMS), with a successful career in the fields of new e-commerce projects and mergers and acquisitions and, subsequently, as a business and corporate finance consultant with the firm Ineo Corporate in Barcelona, advising public bodies on airport infrastructure-related matters. She has published articles in Case Studies on Transport Policy and the Journal of Transport Geography, amongst other publications.
