Doctor by the Universitat Pompeu Fabra with the thesis Las medidas comerciales multilaterales para la protección del medio ambiente y el sistema multilateral del comercio 2006. Supervised by Dr. Ángel José Rodrigo Hernández.

Miguel Ángel Elizalde's research activity has focused on the relationship between international economic law and international protection of the environment and human rights. More specifically, Elizalde is an expert on the interaction between the agreements made within the multilateral trade system on goods, services and intellectual property, and the multilateral agreements on environmental protection and the international standards for the protection of human rights.
