Doctor by the Universidad Complutense de Madrid with the thesis (Des) metaforizar la alteridad la poscolonialidad en el arte en Brasil durante el ai-5 (1968-1979) 2009. Supervised by Dr. Sagrario Aznar Almazán.

Maria Iñigo Clavo's research focuses on topics related with coloniality, curation and museology, modernity and its production of otherness, untranslatability and art in Latin America, with particular emphasis on Brazilian art. She is a member of the Decentralized Modernity/ies R&D group. She was a co-founder of the independent research group Peninsula: Colonial Processes and Artistic and Curatorial Practices, in collaboration with the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía. She has been a visiting professor at the Afterall research centre (2016-2017) and a contract researcher for the project "Meeting Margins: Transnational Art in Europe & Latin America 1950-1978", supported by the Arts & Humanities Research Council (AHRC), the University of Essex and the University of the Arts London (2009-2011), and a postdoctoral researcher at the University of São Paulo (FAPESP). She has contributed to journals  such as e-flux (New York), Afterall (United Kingdom), Stedelijk Museum Journal (Netherlands), Museu de Arte de São Paulo (Brazil), Fran Hals Museum / De Hallen Haarlem (Netherlands), Museo Reina Sofía  (Spain), Versión/sur (Spain), Concinnitas (Brazil), Revista de Occidente (Spain), Bilboquet  (Spain) and Lugar Comum  (Brazil), among others. She was the editor of the special issue of the bilingual journal Re-visiones,  titled "It is possible to decolonize. The South as interlocution", and she has been editor for the journal Art in Translation (Taylor & Francis), Routledge, for the University of Edinburgh.
