In the course of his research career, David Merino has basically focused on topics related with biomedical imaging. In particular, his main interest is related with ophthalmic imaging. Thus, Dr Merino has designed and implemented several retinal imaging devices, based on SLO (scanning laser ophthalmoscopy) and OCT (optical coherence tomography). In both cases, Dr Merino has applied adaptive optics techniques to improve the quality of images obtained from real subjects (both healthy and suffering from different diseases). These studies have been able to show individual photoreceptor cells in the human retina, and the effects that diseases that affect the retina can have at microscopic level. Dr Merino has also worked on the use and development of several microscope techniques, such as super resolution or multiphoton microscopy, for studying the eyes.
