Doctor by the Universitat Pompeu Fabra with the thesis Barcelona a la dècada moderada (1843-1854) el projecte industrialista en la construcció de l'estat centralista 2004. Supervised by Dr. Josep Fontana Lázaro.

Joan Fuster-Sobrepere's R&I activity focuses on the study of contemporary Catalan and Spanish history, honing in particularly on the 19th century, Franco's regime and the city of Barcelona. He is also co-director of the Pau Casals Chair in Music and the Defence of Peace and Human Rights. He is a member of the Language, Culture and Identity in the Global Age (IdentiCat) R&I group.
