Doctor by the Trinity College Dublin — The University of Dublin with the thesis Tandem language learning on the internet: theory, tool development and empirical exploration 2003. Supervised by Dr. David Little, Dr. Carl M. Vogel.
The rise of technologies such as videoconferencing and VoIP is facilitating synchronous and multimodal online communication (both text and voice). My research interests include: a) The transferability and validity of task-based language learning focusing on the acquisition of oral skills in an online environment for both native speakers (NS) and non-native speakers (NNS), and for NNS-NNS interactions. b) The transmission of feedback on oral interactions by the teacher or classmates, including the use of videos generated by the user for this purpose. c) The inclusion of oral interaction in teaching and learning in massive open online courses (MOOCs).
