EFC: A tool for the assessment of the energetic footprint of cloud computing

EFC is an initiative to create awareness about the footprint of digital services. The project takes an interdisciplinary vision and aims to define the most appropriate indicators to create such awareness. Technically, EFC develops a set of open source tools to be deployed in cloud computing infrastructures to respond to an increasing demand for understanding the energetic footprint of computing. The tools need to be adopted by the cloud computing service providers, in an effort to be transparent regarding energy usage. At the same time, awareness needs to be raised among application developers who may interconnect their applications to the EFC API, querying for the real time energy consumption of the backend infrastructures in use. For this initiative to succeed we need to create relevant success stories that involve large parties and administrations. The academic, social and administration services should pioneer this initiative and become first responders to create such awareness that will be followed by others as social pressure increases.
